What to Do if a Collection on Your Credit Report Isn't Yours

Investigate an unfamiliar collection before acting, including whether the collector name differs from the original creditor.

First question: is the information accurate? A negative entry is not automatically an error. Accurate negative information can generally remain on a credit report for years, while inaccurate or incomplete information can be disputed.

Review the entry before taking action

  • Check the creditor or collector name and account identifiers.
  • Review the balance, status and relevant dates.
  • Compare the entry with your records and other credit reports.
  • If something appears wrong, document the specific discrepancy instead of broadly disputing the entire account.

What not to assume

Do not assume that every negative item can or should be removed. Current CFPB guidance says accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply because it hurts your credit. If the information is accurate, the next step is usually different from the dispute path.
