What to Do About an Incorrect Late Payment

If a payment is reported late and you believe that is inaccurate, use this checklist to investigate and document the issue.

Start with accuracy. Compare the entry with your own records. CFPB identifies common problems such as accounts belonging to someone else, incorrect late-payment or account status information, duplicate debts, and incorrect balances or limits. A difference or unfamiliar name is a reason to investigate - not automatic proof of an error.

What to check

  • Confirm the account name, account number and who furnished the information.
  • Compare balances, dates, payment history and status with your records.
  • Check whether the same issue appears on more than one credit report.
  • Save copies of statements, letters, payment confirmations or other records that support what you believe is correct.

If the information appears inaccurate or incomplete

You have the right to dispute credit report errors. CFPB recommends disputing inaccuracies with the credit reporting company and the company that furnished the information. Explain specifically what is wrong and include copies of supporting documents.

What not to assume

Do not assume that every negative item can or should be removed. Current CFPB guidance says accurate negative information generally cannot be removed simply because it hurts your credit. If the information is accurate, the next step is usually different from the dispute path.
